Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from skipper Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in multiple conversations following his team's defeat in the second Ashes versus Australia previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I required," said the England leader.

However, after Crawley scored 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation subsequent to England suffered a loss in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The team subsequently took a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he said his players had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their previous tenure in charge.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of something special entering this game."

The Hosts Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday came during a decisive triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side 207-6 chasing a daunting target of 435.

Consequently, Australia need four wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable three-nil advantage after three Tests.

A loss would prolong the English team's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in only eleven days of cricket – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's performance in the third Test probably answers doubts about his immediate future in the side, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second knock on day four, extending his poor record against Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

However, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said he. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is noise from the outside. There is no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley finished.
