Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.

Replay technology will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the option to contest specific decisions from the chair umpire, following the practice already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step follows just a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to review specific decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can initiate.

Case in Point

An illustrative example took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and determined the player was responsible for interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
